Freedom 30 Diesel Tank

Post by Stephen_H »

I'm converting my F30 to an electric motor and just pulled out the aluminum diesel tank. Rather than scrapping it, was wondering if anyone is interested in it? Looking for a nominal amount for the effort to clean up and ship it - $50 + shipping cost from Seattle to wherever you'd like. It looks like its in good shape, pictures attached.

My question is: What electric system did you switch to?

Thanks.

I went electric 3 years ago, I love it. I would recommend Lithium, even though its more expensive.

Goose13, what kind of range to you experience? Would you mind sharing some of the details about the set up such as motor manufacturer and how many/size of batteries?

I have the 10kw motor built by Electric Yacht and 1x 100amp hour, 48v lithium battery by Smartbattery(fit right where my old fuel tank was on my F33). The Batt weighs 120lbs, so after the install your looking at about the same amount of weight as the old Yanmar. So far the furthest I've gone is 20 miles (Vallejo marina to Richmond marina) with a favorable current and no wind. I still had 25% of the battery left, I did 90% of the trip drawing 10-11amps, 900-1000rpm at 2-4.5kts, average speed for the trips was 3.6kts. Once I get my solar array up and running I will have unlimited range with direct sunlight at 2-4kts. The motor also regenerates the battery under sail above 4-5kts depending on the current direction and strength. I can reach max hull speed at full power which I can sustain for about 45-55min. The great thing about lithium is you can drain the battery until it automatically shuts off and it doesn't damage the battery or reduce the cycle life which is advertised 3000-5000 cycles. I highly recommend Electric Yacht, great service and customer support. Smartbattery two years ago had very poor customer service and they sold me the wrong charger and wouldn't let me return it, so I have reservations recommending them but the battery has preformed great and it comes in a nice neat package. If u decide to go with a different battery system (like 4x12v lithium batt) let me know because I have a battery charger for 4 x12v lithium batteries that I can sell u. I've met and talked with other people who have gone electric and everyone who used Led Acid whish they would have gone lithium, the price is not much more when u look at it because you can discharge the lithium to 0 and led acid to 50% without damaging the battery. PM me your phone number and I'll give you a ring if you want more info.

Goose13 thanks for sharing all that info. I'm surprised to hear a single charge gives you 25+ miles. I have been curious about this for a while now but since I bought the boat 1.5 years ago I still have plenty to do before I consider going in that direction. I can only imagine the efficiency will only increase some over time. Thanks again.

So the Battery outlook in the next 10 years is 5-10 times increase in storage capacity for the same weight and coast of today. Good luck on the engine transition and if u have anymore questions let me know.

I'm going with the Electric Yacht 10kw system as well with a 4 x 12v/200ah LiFePO4 battery pack. Got the Quiq 1500 battery charger for it. The batteries will be located under the port settee in my F30, which was the only reasonable place to put them. Batteries and motor just shipped this week, so I'll put up a long post about the transition once it's done in December.
