We're back on the boat in San Diego. She was detailed yesterday and looks great. Now it'll be a week of getting her put back together and then we're headed to Mexico.

Here's a link to my latest log: http://www.geoffschultz.org/Log_Page.ph ... BlueJacket

Geoff,
I hope you, your family and Blue Jacket did not have any problem with the tsunami.

Thanks for the concern, but I'm happy to report that we didn't experience anything. We're way down the San Diego bay and any surge that came through was quickly absorbed. However, just N of here there was some significant damage to boats when the tsunami wave arrived.

Posted quite a few underway logs on my web site that can now only be seen by viewing the position map for this year. Also published a log describing Cedros Island, which was quite fantastic, at http://www.geoffschultz.org/Log_Page.ph ... ,%20Mexico Photos of Cedros are at http://www.geoffschultz.org/2011_Sailin ... We're now in Cabo San Lucas which is at the tip of the Baja peninsula. You can find logs and photos from the trip at http://www.geoffschultz.org/Log_Page_In ... gion=2011:

We've been "stuck" in La Paz, Mexico for the past 2 weeks waiting for generator parts. They've finally arrived and we'll be headed N up the Sea of Cortez. I've published a bunch of logs, photos and video since I last posted here. You can find the logs at:

We've been sailing through the Sea of Cortez and have been having an amazing time. I can't believe how beautiful it is. Since we're back in Internet range, I've uploaded a bunch of photos and added new logs. Check them out at http://www.GeoffSchultz.org/

As you may have noticed, we're back from this year's cruise through the Sea of Cortez in Mexico. We had an absolutely wonderful time. No safety concerns, the people were wonderful and the scenery was stunning. It got really hot towards the end (one day we had a heat index of 123F!), so it was good to get back home to the Boston area. Next year we're going to spend another year in the area, but will move BlueJacket further S to Puerto Vallarta in preparations for the following year's trip to Panama.

Since I've been home I've been busy working on the web site. I've added a lot of capabilities, including much better photo indexing. One thing that I just finished was the dynamic creation of Google Earth (KML) files. If you've never used Google Earth, it's a free program from http://earth.google.com that allows you to fly all over the earth (and now space) and zoom into things down to the street level. Through the magic of databases, I'm able to dynamically create a KML file that has placemarks for all of our anchorages and the placemarks contain links to logs and photo albums. There's even a route built into it that allows you to "fly" over our cruising route. That's pretty cool. And since this is dynamic, it can generate KML files for everywhere that we've been.

My logs for 2011 are located http://www.geoffschultz.org/Log_Page_In ... gion=2011: and if you want to see them in Google Earth, just click on the link at the top of the page.

Note that I've also geo-coded my photos, so when you're viewing a photo album you'll see a globe icon in the navigation buttons. If you click on the globe icon, a Google Maps window will appear showing where the image was taken.

Hi Geoff,
On topic of cruising, I have a sail plan question related to US East Coast, Caribbean and South America. We have a 1991 Freedom 38 which we are planning to retire on in about 4 years. Initial cruising plans are to spend several years exploring US East Coast, Caribbean and South America. I'm exploring possibility of making a couple 0f changes in sail plan before throwing off the dock lines, and wanted to get your thoughts - in light of your extended cruising in these areas. Thinking of replacing my camberspar jib with a mid-range-weight overlapping reaching sail on a roller furling unit. In the 16 years we have spent sailing Freedoms (F30 for 11 years and F38 for 5), we haven't spent much time hard-on-the-wind, and generally use the main only in heavy air reaching. Reaching sail seems like a good idea for lighter air. In addition to (current) minimal use of the camberspar jib, it is definitely in the way when anchoring (manual Simpson Lawrence windlass) or picking up a mooring. We're also thinking about replacing stock boom with furling boom - to eliminate lazy jacks and the need to go up on mast steps to attach/detach halyard - although this change would not likely impact sailing characteristics. Would appreciate your thoughts based on actual sailing experience in these areas. Glad to chat off line if you would prefer - sailmonoh@gmail.com
Thank you,
Bob
