Carbon fiber masts and lightning.

Post by harv17 »

There has been a lot of speculation of carbon fiber masts and lightning. There is an article in the latest Professional Boat Builder magazine about the study done by a professional surveyer of a carbon fiber mast that was struck by lightning. His survey indicated that the mast sustained very little damage and was still insureable for insurance. The mast was over a 100 ft long and quite expensive to replace. It made a very interesting story and provides some knowledge to carbon fiber masts.

The article is in "Professional Boat Builder" that is digitally sent from "proboat@imirus.com". I think that you can subscribe thru' them. The magazine is very interesting for professional boat people. They send a digital PDF to the subscription recipients and they ask not to forward it.
Enjoy!!!
