broken main halyard

what is the best way to replace broken main halyard on freedom 35, what type of line is best? dholtkamp, "Thumper"

The main halyard on our F36 broke over the summer. Brought it into the boatyard, and they hoisted one of their riggers to the top of the mast using the mast/boom picker truck, which was a definite "don't try this at home, not OSHA approved" moment. They strung about 8 nuts to a heavy thread, sewed that to the bitter end of the new halyard, and fed it down from the top of the mast. Fished it out at the bottom with a coat hanger.
