Re-insulating refrigerator…

Post by RobertGuarnieri »

Has anyone needed or wanted to add more insulation to the refrigerator on the boat. After installing a entire new unit and seeing how wonderful it is to have more than just cool food on board and wanting to make sure I am doing everything I can to keep it that way I figured I would check into this venture before just ripping the counters off and going from there. The fridge is right next to the engine and sounds very hollow all the way around it. I was considering taking the counter top off but not sure if the entire box is attached to the top or the hull itself.
My hope is to plastic off both the space and the unit and then fill with expanding foam allowing it to rise and not crush anything, when its cured pull the box out and remove the plastic and put it back in place.
Also I have a drain that flows directly into the bilge which is not a good thing either and was considering glassing that closed but the main objective is to get as much insulation around the unit as possible. I hope to be moving south in less than 2 years and want to make sure the rum stays very cold.

Hi Rob,

I know that Geoff is probably out skiing somewhere but I know that he is currently checking into vacuum panels. I'm waiting to see how that project goes before tearing into ours.

I'm back at home for the weekend...Anyhow, my VIPs are on order and should be arriving in 2-3 weeks. I'll let you know how they turn out.

I found the article I was thinking of and have attached it for those interested in rebuilding a refrigeration box.
