Thru Hulls

HI, Seeking advice -

One of the original 1-1/2" Marlon seacocks (the one on the galley sink drain) on my 1987 Freedom 30 has seized and will not close all the way. I'm arranging to have it changed out when I get the boat hauled out for bottom paint sometime between now and spring.

The boat has 4 seacocks - two 1-1/2" and two 3/4" ones, all Marlon with bases glued to the hull with 5200(??). I'm debating having them all changed at the same time.

I have two 1-1/2" and one 3/4" bronze Apollo ball valve seacocks (with bases) with their thru hull fittings from a Catalina 30 and one spare 1-1/2" Marlon seacock in my boat spares pile.

1. Should I just replace the failing seacock or all of them?

2. Should I stay with Marlon seacocks or use the Apollo bronze / SS ball seacocks?

Thanks

I would stay with Marlon. Some of the major reasons that Freedom went with them was lack of corrosion and much less chance of failure in the case of a lightening strike.

Can you simply disassemble the one that is seized and clean it? Also, if the others are working OK, don't replace them. Simply clean/grease them.

Just to close this on eout -

The stuck Marlon thru-hull has magically able to function again.

Even though the diver said he found nothing in it, after a month of gingerly trying to operate the valve, it now functions. I'm guessing something blocking the operation finally dislodged or rotted away sufficiently to let the ball turn.

So, one thing to cross off the list for my haul-out scheduled in Port Townsend, WA in late January where they have a building with a high enough roof to take my Freedom 30 inside without removing the mast. The haul-out list is down to: two new transducers, installing an Autostream feathering prop and putting on the Copper-coat bottom.
