Has the subject of wing masts been brought up for freedoms? Building two for a ck would be the answer to much of their upwind problems. I know Sponberg has figured this out long ago but has anyone been success-
full doing it their self? Numbknots
wing mast
Re: wing mast
Yes, look for info on Wobegon Daze, a modified F38 ketch. Sponberg did the mod himself. Owner is/was a dr. Cady. I have a simple philosophy towards wing masts; with speeds under 12 knots, it's not really worth the hassle. The loss of effective sailarea behind the round mast can easily be compensated with some extra sail area. The increased chance of separation at the leeside can be monitored with streamers. But that's how I see it. I like the simplicity of the rig and don't want to sacrifice it.
