F36/38 Sugar scoop drain

Post by brico »

Hi,

My 1984 F36 extended to 38 with a retrofitted sugar scoop has a drain on the bottom of the sugar scoop just next to the original transom. This causes the sugar scoop to fill with water when motoring and sailing fast enough to get the sugar scoop deep enough to touch the water. On the top of it there are two 4" holes which I assume were made to facilitate the bolt tightening when this thing was fitted. This water although it drains does create some mildew inside and I do not like it. Is it really necessary to have this drain or i can plug it and see what happens?

This is not the answer you were looking for, however I am interested in your sugarscoop transom. We have a 1989 Freedom 36 and want to retrofit it with the swim platform seen on the Freedom 38. Can you point me in the right direction to get this modification?

Freedom Yachts made mine in 1992. If someone purchased the mold when Freedom shut down, they could make one. Mark Edwards might know if the mold is still around...

Unfortunately the original Freedom mold was destroyed several years ago.

I understand tartan yachts purchased rights to freedom name. I don't believe they have molds.

Just realized that no one who posted (including me) addressed your question of a drain hole in the add on sugar scoop. I would fit a removable plug and seal the scoop. You can check for filling of the scoop through the access port. My F36/38 has survived for a long time with no drain and no drain hole.

Thanks kerry,

I'll try and plug mine with something now that I have launched it back in the water. It may be little harder to do then when it was on dry.
