speed temp transducer

Speed has been intermittent for quite some time. Pull the xducer and clean paddle wheel but no joy. Sort of starts working whenever. Last trip is did not work at all over 150 miles. Just happened to check temp the other day and it is out too.

Just wondering if xducers fail very often? It is a sealed unit and intuitively looks like it should last forever, what's to break other than the paddle wheel which is spinning along just fine. I realize this is naive but just sayin, the unit is about 4 years old.

I am confident the wiring is good.

Depth is fine at instruments so I am confident instruments are good

Should I just buy a new xducer or are there tests I should run?

Also interested in commentary here. My speed works intermittently, but my experience has been that it needs to be pulled and cleaned weekly to keep it functioning due to algae growth. Also typically reads 1-2kts lower than GPS, even if sailing against currents when I'd expect it to read higher.

Sounds like our experience is identical. Also my speed is s little different port vs starboard tack which I can understand to some extent.

That's assuming the speed is working which it is not.

I believe the latest Raymarine instruments allow calibration of the log transducer which would be a good thing.
