I lost my rudder on my Mull 28 Hull number 2 which was really hull number one back in 2005. The shaft sheared off right under the hull. I did extensive research at the time, there had been very few rudder failures per my research with Mark Edwards and the guy whose name escapes me who used to run the Freedom factory. The original plans were not available from Freedom who was still in business at the time, and Gary Mull's wife who has a set of all the plans was unresponsive. I had insurance from state farm that was going to pay. I couldn't find any of the companies that make rudders for production boats to do one as there wouldn't be enough orders if they went to the trouble. I finally found GMT Composites in Bristol Rhode Island. They found a 28 near by on the hard and reverse engineered the rudder and built me one. They would still have their plans. Foam core, carbon fibre shaft, carbon fiber skin, it was way high tech. State Farm paid for it all, about $10,000. GMT was fantastic. They did the whole job in a month. I dealt with the president, great follow through etc. Obviously, they are expensive, but the rudder is set for another 20 years. contact me off line if you want more information. I have a lot of pictures.
