I have a Yanmar 3JH2-TBE with a KM3A1 gear box. I was just spinning the prop shaft by hand and noted that as I spin it, it suddenly gets easy to spin and then I hear a clunk and then it gets harder to spin. The clunk seems to be coming from the transmission. This only happens if I spin it quickly and it occurs at random points in the rotation (it's not at the same angle) and it occurs in both directions of rotation.
I must admit that I've never tried spinning my prop shaft at the transmission coupler before, so I don't know if this is normal or not. Can anyone tell me what I'm feeling/hearing and if this is something to be concerned about?

Do you have a fixed blade or feathering prop?

Yes, I have a MaxProp, but the clunk is coming from the transmission. Good try, but I'm afraid that's not it.

I think it has most likely to do with the peak torque limiter in that transmission. But I'm not sure so I'll put your question to my go-to guy and find out for sure.

Re: Strange Transmission Motion/Sound on Yanmar 3JH2-TBE
Not having any direct experience with that particular model of transmission, and seeing some odd stuff in the literature (poorly translated into English as usual) I can't say for sure. However, one of my friends who is a Yanmar dealer says it's not normal. Next time I talk to the other friend who's a Yanmar Dealer I'll ask him too. I personally think it could still be something to do with that odd torque limiting add on. When I first looked into this I was in quite a bit of pain from that bad molar and now that it's out I'm a bit fogged with Percocet. Maybe when I come down I'll be able to give you better advice. heh heh
