Engine Overheating

Post by philipl »

Towards the end of each sailing season my yanmar 3GM overheats. It can usually be resolved by diving below the boat with a small brush and clearing the fine algea growth on the plastic sieve to the water intake. Has anyone just removed the sieve insert altogether? It would be a lot easier just to clean the on board water filter a little more frequently.

I'm not sure I would do that. On my 40/40 I overheated because of eel grass up in the hose between the through hull and the graco filter. It was a pain to get the hose off. You can see your strainer when you swim/dive, and it can be easily cleaned when you do the bottom.
