Freedom 30 Electric Windlass Options
Freedom 30 Electric Windlass Options
I recently purchased a 1989 Freedom 30 and am wondering if anyone has had any luck installing an electric windlass. Without a proper chain locker (just an open space in front of the v-berth) there doesn't seem to be a ton of space to install one. Is it possible and if so, what style and make would you recommend?
Re: Freedom 30 Electric Windlass Options
I installed a Lewmar V-1 windlass on Heart's Desire. It fits very well. I reinforced the deck with epoxy treated 3/4" plywood for backing. (Some would use aluminum plate.)
I've got 100 ft of 5/16" HT chain with 200 ft of 5/8" anchor rode spliced on to it in the compartment in front of the forepeak. Fits pretty well, although I'm thinking about adding a starboard baffle across the bottom of the opening because sometimes the chain pile tries to roll out on to the berth.

We have a 1990 F32 with a vertical Lewmar using a chain/rope rode all dropping into forepeak. Works okay...Tom K
