Syntech shaft seal - do I need to replace?

I found other posts on this topic but they don't cover the questions I have. The boat I just purchase is on the hard so I don't know if the syntron shaft seal leaks. The engine was replaced in 2002 with a Yanmar 40 but that was two owners ago and its not known if the seal was replaced.
So...
1. Is there a way to determine is the seal was replaced.
2. How long do syntron seals last.
3. Is there a way to tell if the seal needs to be replace besides leaking.
