Garhauer Hard Vang Installation

Post by Tom »

I am a new F39 Pilot House owner, 1983, hull #15, and would like to install a Garhauer Vang to control both booms. Does anyone have experience bolting/screwing into the mast?

Thanks,
Tom

Hello Tom, I have no vang (I have wishbones) but experience in making holes in carbon fibre in general. The answer to your question is: it depends on the mast. Some masts have an aluminum reinforcement plate on the inside, some have a beefed up carbon fibre ring around the mast. The Garhauer system involves a two part ring that is clamped around the mast. This works fine, but you have to find a solution to prevent the ring from sliding up, other than tightening the clamp which compresses the mast. Somewhere else on this board there are photos to show you how you can do that. The easiest is to connect the vang clamp to the deck ring.
