Mast weight

Post by CrazyRU »

Does anybody know how heavy our masts? It doesn't matter what model, I just trying to compare it to "conventional" rigging.
Thanks.

I recall reading somewhere that a Freedom 40 Cat Ketch with standard booms and single ply sails carries a total of 345 pounds above the deck level.

That would be masts, booms, gooseneck, sails, battens, sheets, reefing lines, & halyards.

I have no idea if that's correct, but having hauled my sails & battens around some, the answer on the mast weight question would be...Not Much!

On my F44 each mast alone weighs around 60-80 kg / 130-175 lbs. I can just carry one sail without battens, so these must be 40 kg / 90 lbs each ex the battens.

I'll go with Michel on this. I really didn't think 345 lbs was "enough", even though (I think) my masts are shorter and the sails are smaller.

To be fair to whoever came up with the 345 number in the first place, the total mast weight would be reduced by the (larger diameter) portion of the mast that's below the deck ring...around 6-1/2 feet or so of it.

Add back the weight of a 19' boom (times 2) and you're a good ways over 345 lbs.

It may be that the weight of the masts (alone) above the deck come to 345 lbs.
