Newport Bridge height (clearence) other than Center span

Post by msheehan1 »

Hi everyone

I know the center span is about 194ft.

There is a channel on the east side of Rose island (runs from the point towards the bridge) and since I am in the point I was wondering what the height of any spans are?

I have made it through the 3 third span (from center) as you are approaching the bridge, but it is still unnerving not knowing the height, plus the depth falls off pretty quickly to 8-15ft (which is still ok since I draw 6)

Anybody know?

Thanks,

Mike Sheehan

I don't know from an actual measurement, but I took a photo of the Newport bridge and measured the distance from the water to the mid-span. That distance was .567". I then measured the height from 7 spans from the center towards Newport, and came up with 0.232". By my calculations, that would be 79' at that point. Please note that this number shouldn't be used for navigation, but I've seen quite a few sailboats go under those spans.

Geoff,

Thanks -- I would concur with your calculation, since there was plenty of room when I went under. I think I will get a range finder and go out there.
