In Maine there are several entrepreneurs who make bags out of used sails. When I replaced my main a few years ago, I donated my sail to one of these bag makers in exchange for a bag. You may have someone out your way that does the same thing.

Painting your own bottom will cost significantly less than what a yard will charge. You'll want to prepare the surface properly. Usually a thorough powerwashing will suffice.
