Re: Adjustable boom choker on a CK; is it really necessary?
Rafa; It looks like you've got a combination plan. The boom choker is used on the nonsuches as you use your outhaul. You do need something to hold your boom forward, the boom lash works on the wrap around sails for this. It looks to me that you can eliminate either the choker or the outhaul, as long...

Re: Running Free
Erik; I'm 300 miles from Running Free, so I can't help you accurately. It is original equipment from Freedom and I am told similar to a John Deere part. The distance from the rudder centerline couldn't be more than a few inches. I'm sure there are pictures in our website; Runningfree.us but it would...

Re: Running Free
I'm pretty sure it is the original name. We met the woman who owns one hull number up, (there was no hull no 39) and she seemed to recall it being one of many to leave the factory with "free" some how incorporated into the name.

Re: Running Free
I'm the third owner of Running Free and am under the belief that insuring carbon fiber masts was very expensive, because no-one understood the risks in 1980. Aluminum was an option that was not uncommon. In my 21 years of sailing her I have only heard of one unstayed mast coming down. I talked to th...

Re: Stayless Cat Ketch -- Change My Mind
Hi; I think you are pretty much on key. Production boats get a bad reputation. frequently, because when that fin keel hits bottom the floors at the aft end of the keel will crack or break. This is the way they are designed and most fin keel boats will do the same if they hit hard enough. When I boug...

Re: F40 centreboard weight
I'm guessing at a few hundred pounds. Mine uses a 3/8" line spliced to a 1/8" 7x19. Best to tie the line to the board (twice around with a bowline) as anything stainless will corrode in the box. The 7x19 is only to go into the winch. I seem to remember lifting it by myself when it was in the slings....

Re: Cat Ketch or Cat Schooner?
You really should contact the designer or a naval architect for this answer. If you put more sail area in your aft sail you will have more weather helm and you won't be able to make use of the extra sail. If you have a large barndoor rudder, correcting for the weather helm will slow you down conside...
