Re: New Freedom 30 owner in Puget Sound

Just curious about the year and hull number of your recently purchased F32. What I’ve seen indicates these Hoyt-designed F32s were only produced in the mid 1980s. Also how many hours were on your Yanmar, was it original and what killed it? Mine F32 has the original 3GMF and it seems healthy though I...

Re: Cutlass Bearing

OMG I finally understand what you are all telling me. Sorry to be so dense. The stiff black material is the actual bearing surface. It lines the tubular bronze shell that seemed to me to look so durable. So yes, my cutlass bearing is failing and I’m lucky to be able to replace it before it goes comp...

Re: Cutlass Bearing

Thanks Bob and Geoff. I certainly subscribe to the wisdom of preventative maintenance. I found some informative video on UTube. It appears that changing the cutlass bearing in a strut without removing the shaft is, whenever possible, the modern form of surgery. It requires a special tool set and som...

Re: Cutlass Bearing

Thanks Geoff. So that black material is the actual bearing or bushing, not some superfluous filler or seal (like I might have wishfully dreamed?). I imagined a cutlass bearing being some piece of elegant bronze hardware. Sounds like a project for the yard crew. Is a cutlass bearing replaced by remov...

Cutlass Bearing

Pardon if I’m submitting this twice. No experience posting a photo. I have no knowledge or experience with cutlass bearings, but there is something just at the forward end of the strut on my F32, that hasn’t been visible in the previous 7 years I’ve owned the boat. Looks like a thick black plastic t...

Re: HULL ID

John
Thanks for the clear explanation. Help me with the month part though.
I have 32067A585. I assumed 585 was May 1985 but since your 1984 hull was just two earlier than mine,
does the “A” designate January? What’s the “5”?

Re: F32 Gunmout boom spinnaker camber spar jib

Thanks Alan. Fine timing. I still haven’t managed to find either a sleeve or a maker.
I’ll pursue UK. Spring is coming.

Re: Odd mainsail shape - advice?

John, could you clarify for me how you flatten the sail. More halyard tension? Outhaul? Cunningham? Vang?
Thanks
