Re: F21 First sail

Looks like fun! I really like the dodger! I don't know how you rigged the mainsheet, but I am thinking of bringing the tail forward to the mast and then back to the cockpit. When singlehanding, it is hard to adjust when under a lot of load or with the traveler eased down or, in your case, with the d...

Re: F21 outboard motors

Newt, On the day of the best experience,I would estimate 15+ true with more in gusts got the boat so I was having loong surfs down slightly oblique waves. Blasting along the Connecticut shore from Greenwich to New Haven (ENE), about 1kt of current with me, 15kts of wind from the WSW, we averaged nea...

Re: F21 outboard motors

Hi Chadrider, yes I agree, my 4 stroke Honda is much quieter and less smelly that the old 2 stroke Mariner I replaced. I am still running the Honda in but was out today and had it at 50-60% throttle for a while, pushing against wind in chop, I was doing about 5 knots, so I am very pleased so far. Y...

Re: F21 outboard motors

My first motor was an 8HP two stroke 88 Evenrude that was on the boat when I bought it. LOTS of power but terrible fuel economy and a bear to keep happy (ethanol fuel and all). Second motor was a 5HP Mercury 2 stroke. Really awesome engine: light, powerful, smooth. BUT, it too suffered at the hands ...

Re: Transom Leak in F21

Paul Dennis of Warren River Boatworks acquired an F21 with a wildly delaminated doghouse and a keel problem. It was far beyond saving. He cut the bow off it to extract the tabernacle mast. I went there to look at it because that very boat used to be mine! I got it for free several years before but t...

Re: Transom Leak in F21

Thanks
I'll hunt up one of those plugs (I've got a bunch of them I just need to find them!) and put it in from the outside to cover the crack. We'll see if that fixes things!

BTW. The hull is definitely balsa cored at least the ones made here in RI were. I've seen one cut in half. Lots of balsa.

Transom Leak in F21

My bilge has been full the last three times I have gone sailing. First I suspected rain, but yesterday it was full again and the water is salty. I have NO through hulls so, cross that off. I watched for a while and it is coming from the back of the boat. So, I opened up the starboard locker and felt...

Re: Minor disaster aboard F39PHS (Perkins 4108)

I too suspect the starter. Pull the starter and take it to a starter rebuild shop. They will be able to diagnose it really fast and the hundreds you may spend there could save you thousands in the end! If it is hydrolock, you will need to know how. Two primary suspects: Water from the muffler/manifo...

Re: Freedom 21 Mast Creaking and movement

Paul would know! It actually corresponds neatly with what I have observed. Sooooooo, when I next have my mast out, I will shim the bottom to fit the "hat" more closely. I may also fabricate something like the CK33 collars. A bit of overkill for the 21 but it solves my "through the partners" problem ...

Re: Freedom 21 Mast Creaking and movement

My mast creaks a little too. I have not spent a lot of time looking into it, but I think it is the mast base moving a tiny amount since it does it when the boat pitches with the mast under load. I think the noise happens when the base moves (a tiny bit) dragging the end of the mast across the step. ...
