Re: New Freedom 30 Owner

Re: the depth and speed instruments, you may want to consider just sealing the old transducer holes and using an air internal mount depth transducer. The Hawkeye is an inexpensive and fairly nice unit. Works well for me. As for speed, there are various other ways to get accurate speed readings via c...

Re: F28: Replacing teak / holly sole and wood paneling

Hi Ed- Good to see another F28 owner here! I’ve done a few small projects on mine, putting in solar and an autopilot, sorting out the single line reefing system that had never been put together properly, propane tanks as nd locker updates, etc. Plenty more to do, as always on a boat. I think you’ll ...

Re: very low water bilge pump

Hi Mike- I also built my own last year using a small 12v pump, a lighter style plug and cable, an in line filter, and a couple of pieces of hose. I just use it with a small bucket as a portable “bilge vacuum”. I ended up replacing the in line filter with a small square of fabric wire tied to the end...

Re: Freedom 32 Continuous reef setup

The aft reef lines are an ideal place for dyneema. It allows both smaller diameter line for the internal boom blocks and low friction for the running bowline. I use a different color line for each reef to make life easier.

Re: F30 New Wind Instrument - Mast Un-Step?

I thought it to be nearly impossible, so opted for the RayMarine wireless wind instrument. After one season, I’m happy with it. This is what I have been looking at as well. It should talk to the EV100 autopilot as well, allowing steering to the wind angle, great for upwind and also avoiding acciden...

Re: Small leak

Please share your progress, photos and tips if you get a chance! I think that one issue to watch is possible scoring of the prop shaft from the previous seal causing some leakage with the new seal (as Mike already mentioned).

Re: Small leak

IMG_5204.jpeg I spoke to Lasdrop at the Annapolis Sailboat show this fall and their DrySeal lip seal (as yours appears to be) was the one they recommended for the space available in our boats. Looking at your photo, it’s not clear whether you have enough room for a spare seal or not. It may depend ...

Re: Freedom 28M Reunion

Very cool, especially considering that there were only about 50 28’s built!
Great opportunity to compare boat details and mods.

Mine has some discoloration but I don’t really see any paint chipping. I doubt yours is anything serious structurally, but more likely just expansion/contraction differences along the boundary of the track.

Rudder tube and post

There have been a number of rudder failures in our Freedoms that have been documented but not much about the causes and possible prevention. Since the design is so unique in the industry, there is also little to compare to traditional bearing and post design. I’ve read about at least 3 F28 failures ...
