Re: mast wedge help
As always, YMMV, however, on my boat with the traditional wedge, there is usually a gap where the two ends come together. My mast get pulled every year for inside storage, and the yard just uses a very large screwdriver where they insert it into the gap and then start prying up one of the ends -- a...

Re: Replacement mast wedge
I have also left mine dry -- although your mileage may vary :-). I have found that by starting from one end and working my way around, I can get it very close to level with the deck ring (within an 1/8" at least). Also, I stay away from 5200 for anything I might need to separate in the future (which...

Re: Replacement mast wedge
On my boat at least (Mull 32), there is a ring and a collar, in addition to the polyurethane wedge (which is only "ring shaped" when it is inserted and in place). The collar stays with the mast when the mast is un-stepped and the ring stays attached to the deck. When the mast is re-stepped, the wedg...

Re: Replacement mast wedge
I can only speak for my own experience of having had my mast un-stepped/re-stepped annually for the last dozen years or so: Did you lubricate the ring? If so with what? - No Did you drive the wedge down to increase tightness? If so, how? - Yes, I use a small 2x3 (approximately 18 inches in length, c...

Re: Original Harstick/F30 aft reef lines
I have the same boat and have used both loose footed as well as "footed" mains (although mine just used about a 8-10 slides to hold the foot to the boom), and regardless of the main, have rigged it just as shown in the diagram. The reef line goes up and through the main reef grommet, then down aroun...

Re: Boom Vang mast collar
Not sure it would have any different effect, but I used a truck inner tube (softer rubber for sure) as my rubber source between my vang collar on my F32 (Mull) and the mast which I first glued to the inside of the vang collar (but used no glue between it and the mast) -- and I personally haven't exp...

Re: Will jib hanks bind on new forestay
2 things to look for that I have experienced in the past: * Make sure that none of the hanks are inverted -- as this will cause binding. * On my boat, I have different size lines for the jib and spin halyards -- and when I re-did the lines one year, I assumed that the jib halyard should use the bott...

Re: Apparent short on starting
Very much agree -- very helpful insight -- and I will definitely add this "fix" to my re-commissioning tasks for the spring (I do have the "stretched" F30, i.e. sugar scoop, so 1988 F32)

Apparent short on starting
I have a Freedom 32 (Mull), which has lately developed an apparent short on attempting to start the engine -- but typically only on restart after either running or sailing some distance. In the morning at the slip, seems to work fine, press the starter button, engine turns over and starts normally. ...
