Re: 1987 Freeedom 30 Survey

A colleague of mine in the SF Singlehanded Sailing Society got me motivated to do more homework regarding my upcoming shaft seal replacement/repair. I am coming out of the Water 18 April so I needed someone to give me a push. What an adventure! I followed the Tides Marine path for awhile but got col...

Re: F30 spinnaker dimensions

I am at 168 now and wondering what they will hit me with when I go to the gummount which is why I am asking the question. I am shoal draft which is not spelled out on my phrf cert for 2015 so maybe i shoud try to get some credit for the shoal keel while I loose some credit for the gunmount.

Re: F30 spinnaker dimensions

Hi all, bumping this discussion to ask follow on question. Does anyone have a PHRF rating for the F30 equipped with the gun mount spinnaker? I am currently at 168 and have to apply for a 2016 cert. I will be adding the gun mount and wondering what sort of rating hit to expect.

Thanks,

Mike

Re: Prop Shaft installation

I talked to Paul Dennis about this very thing a few weeks ago. On the F30 he told me if you pull the cutlass bearing before you attempt shaft removal you can just slide past the rudder. Not sure if this would apply to other models.

Re: climbing your unstayed carbon mast, your experience?

Gerald, Yes, I have absolutely no desire to climb the mast with the sail up but when I owned an F25 I had the main halyard sheave jam with the sail up. I had to get up there and free the halyard which had jumped the sheave. On the 25 I had a spinnaker halyard at the masthead so I had crew winch me u...

Re: climbing your unstayed carbon mast, your experience?

I use a top climber with security provided by a webbing strap tied in a klemheist around the mast. I slide the strap along with the climb. Of course it has to come off temporarily to get round the forestay. Couple of things I have trouble with are getting comfortable access to the very top of the ma...

Re: F30 spinnaker dimensions

Thanks very much for the dimensions!! My guess was pretty close. Since my pole is 18 foot vice the 16 foot original standard I will probably add some length to the foot for the used "test" sail I will be seeking. I will try to stick close to the leech/luff measurement you recorded. That should get m...

Re: F30 spinnaker dimensions

Thanks Heart's Desire. Excellent information. I had pretty much come to the same conclusion regarding using a spinnaker size in the ballpark, practice with it and then decide where to go from there. I needed some reinforcement. One really good piece of info. was the comment about 1/2 ounce cloth. I ...

F30 spinnaker dimensions

I purchased a gun mount, pole and spinnaker from one of our colleagues on the board but the pole and spinnaker are sized for a Freedom 32. The pole is 2 feet longer than the F30 standard pole . I am going to stick with this length. However the spinnaker hoist on a 32 is 5 feet greater than the 30 so...

Re: 1987 Freeedom 30 Survey

I spoke to Paul Dennis yesterday. Very pleasant and helpful guy as many have mentioned. He has the tides available and, since he is familiar with them and sells them, I have decided to go that route. Paul had some unpleasant news though. He mentioned I can expect to have to replace the shaft, the co...
