Re: Broken aluminium mast

Bill, Oops and sorry. There's a very good article on the Junk Rig Association pages about new masts being made from Dutch spun alloy tubes (same as lamp standards/lighting columns) with a wooden insert to about 33% height - I think carefully crafted by trial and error in an X shape and rammed up the...

Re: And it begins

Hello, I reengined F33/35 CK with Beta 30. Many details should be in the forum history, otherwise come back to me. 25 has just enough power but (in 2011) had a very sharp torque curve which means that either it will not reach full revs or you need to under-prop. 30 is better. 25 has a very appealing...

Re: Repower time - Freedom 32 Yanmar

The key to it to take all winter. You will save up to 30% of the cost by taking it slowly. Measure twice, thrice, four times, check catalogues, talk to folks. You can do it yourself, except the lift out/in which needs a crane, but not a big one. A chain block between the hook and the engine is a goo...

Big Pictures

Hello, Am I the only one who doesn't like these. Unviewable on my standard Win10 PC - needs scrolling etc. And apart from the minor inconvenience for the poster, it reduces the amount of 'sky' that's burling around on the servers out in the desert for the rest of humanity - which might not be all th...

Re: double skin/sail

Hardest bit is getting the wishbone to saddle strings done. Tie the sail bundle so the holes are accessible and tie the front wishbone-end close to the back mast. Backsail is less of a trial. Maybe do it first as a learning exercise. And not in a breeze.

Re: Tapered aluminum light/flag pole

Hello all, Yes, this is a fascinating question and one not to think too deeply about when you're trying to get to sleep at night. I have joined the UK Junk Rig Association which must be the most affordable club I've ever been in - a few pounds a year for a quarterly online magazine full of stuff. Th...

Re: joyful new owner of a freedom 35 cat ketch

Hatuey, hello again. The rudder is probably full of water and can never be repaired properly, but it is very strong. A good GRP boatyard cut the side off mine and dried it out and put it together again but we both know that it will go bad again. The stainless steel inside was OK. Don't try to fix ev...

Re: joyful new owner of a freedom 35 cat ketch

Hatuey, Nice boat, finish is very like my own was when I bought it, but I don't have centreboard. The ball joints are a standard fitting but very expensive. I got two from Cliff Mogridge who you will find with Google. They have a non-metallic bearing surface which eventually wears away and then they...

Re: Boat insurance question

That price seems very reasonable. I'm with Pantaneus who charge more but (mostly) have a good reputation. They are moving up market and would not now take me as a new customer, but I'm a perfect client with no claims in 19 years which means I've mostly paid off the value of the boat..... They held p...
