Adjustable boom choker on a CK; is it really necessary?

Hi all. I’m still somewhat baffled as to the exact function of the adjustable boom choker on a Hoyt 30 CK. Maybe it’s just my ignorance! I have a soft choker on my booms, made of webbing. This is a throwback to the days of double-ply sails. When I changed the sails to single ply, I retained the chok...

Re: Mast creak ... again

Hi Mike I had creaking in Nausikaa's masts initially too. I took the masts off a couple of yrs ago. When resetting them, I wrapped the bottom of each mast in several layers of food polypropylene film (cling film), set them in place, and then poured casting resin in the gap between the masts and the ...

Re: solar panel system setup - request for advise

Philip, suggest you also check a thread titled "illustraded guide to solar installations on boats" on cruisersforum.com. Lost of useful practical examples and info. Worthwhile spending some time there, IMO.
Cheers

Re: storm sail on a F30 CK?

I have a storm sail. Designed to be flown in staysail postition from front of cabin tack on a 3 foot tail from mizzen mast halyard. Never flown in significant wind. Our light air staysail flown from same location in this photo at top of its wind range. Hi Mike Yep, that's the idea. When you have th...

Re: storm sail on a F30 CK?

... we never use the medium one (which my daughter christened the 'sh*tsail')....   Yep, my thoughts exactly. That's what it is! But I agree with you. I can lower my wishbone boom sufficiently (which I would do anyway, in a heavy blow, to minimise windage) to avoid interference on a...

Re: storm sail on a F30 CK?

Here is a pic of my storm sail attached to the main mast. The sail is hanked around the mast. In your case with the wishbone boom, the control lines for the boom may be in the way for this setup. Happy sailing, Jim D. Gotcha! I've seen this design commercially to fit over a furled up jib or genoa. ...

Re: storm sail on a F30 CK?

We have a strongly built blade staysail, which can be set from the mizzen to a hard eye on the coachroof, and supported by a running backstay. We use it on long reaches, but have never tried it in heavy weather. When we have been at sea in a gale, we lay hove-to with only the foot of the main set (...

Re: storm sail on a F30 CK?

P.o. of my Freedom 33CK purchased a storm sail which to this date has never been used, and I hope it stays that way. The sail is to be flown on the main mast. I would strongly advise against using the mizzen mast, because of the loss of steering control. Happy sailing Jim D. Hi Jim. Thanks! Yep, I ...

Re: storm sail on a F30 CK?

Thanks Marno. Wow... 60 knots is one hec of a blow. Yep, that's the scenario I'm thinking of. Less than that too!
I have two reefs on the main. Maybe I should install a third one

storm sail on a F30 CK?

Has anyone ever felt the need to fly a storm sail on an F 30 CK? I've been considering a scenario with very bad weather, when the only option is to follow the wind whilst keeping adequate steerage. This is purely speculative. If and when this scenario presents itself, I'll do my level best to be nic...
