beating at 45 degrees - advice from experts

Hello all Need advice form better sailors than I am. Where I am now, the wind blows in either of two directions, NNE and SSW. All day, most days. As the coast roughly lies N-S, this means any day outing include beating for half a day, to go out or to come back to harbour. Old (Herreshof) cat ketcher...

Nausikaa, all reefed up in anticipation of the 20+ knots we were expecting around Finisterre. On Passage from Cedeira to Muros.

Re: Introduction and Question

Hi, and welcome to the forum! Any surveyor familiar with Freedom boats will know what to look for. Also, I'm not familiar with the larger, more modern boats, so can't comment knowledgeably on the model you are after. The below applies to any boat with a cored hull construction: Specifically re water...

Any Freedom owners in the Med?

Freedoms are an endangered species everywhere, but seem particularly absent from the Med. Saw a 39 PH schooner in Marina Acaidesa in La Linea (Gibraltar) in August, so no strictly the Med, but that's all. If there are any I'd like to hook up! I'm near Alicante.

Musings on the Dog's Watch

estepona lighthouse.jpg What is a lighthouse? It’s a navigational aid. Yes, sure, but then again, it is so much more than that! In the dark nights at sea, nothing is constant. Every indication can also be a deception. The water plays tricks on you. It reflects your navigation lights, in fleeting fl...

Re: A Journey So Far - The travels of Nausikaa

Galicia in the Summer Granted, I am a newbie at this, and at the very beginning of my “cruising career”, so there is still much scope for me to cover yet. This notwithstanding, I doubt I will find anywhere many more enjoyable cruising grounds than the NW corner of the Iberian peninsula. As an overal...

Re: A Journey So Far - The travels of Nausikaa

Gijón to A Coruña (via Cedeira) - 160 NM July 02. One more day in Gijon cowering from the relentless Westerlies. I am getting long in the tooth, I guess, to beat into 15 knots (gusting 25) on the nose for 16 hours, all the way to Ribadeo, and that with a lee shore that has absolutely no shelter for ...

Re: 28 CK Centerboard Loading?

It is about the ONLY thing I don't LOVE about my boat. That CB is a real #$**& to raise so that I rarely lower it. I have seriously considered moving the line to the aft end of the CB to reduce some of the very convuluted block arrangements on the forward edge. The line would "sing" with movement t...

Re: A Journey So Far - The travels of Nausikaa

A most enjoyable story so far, Rafael! Are you going to overwinter in Torrevieja? We shall be visiting a little North of there (by car) in the spring, so would look you up if our visits coincide. I'd like to see the G10 rig for real! We know the area to the North of Alicanté quite well, if you need...
