Re: Weird Freedom
It's a UK built F35 CK; the offset hatch at the aft end of the coachroof gives its provenance. Obviously out of commission, since both masts have been removed. I'm sure that if the picture was larger, you would see that the mast is that of the bermudian rig on the sloop beyond it. To step a single m...

Re: F33 Cat-Ketch Mizzen Staysail
Castaway came with three staysails, one large, spinnaker-like cruising chute, of which the tack goes to the weather toe rail by the main mast and the sheet to a block on the mizzen boom, as shown in Manuel's picture. The middle one we never use (christened the "sh*ts'l" by my daughter), and a blade ...

Re: 33 Cat Ketch traveler
We have always found the 2:1 purchase adequate, but we don't usually try to adjust the traveller if the main is sheeted in hard, unless we can briefly luff-up. With the mizzen, we usually pull the traveller across using the sheet above the traveler block in one hand and the traveller control line in...

Re: Need HIN for Freedom 35 built in UK
On my boat the HIN is moulded into the transom a few inches below the gunwhale, I think on the starboard side (from memory), followed by the date of manufacture. The mark is only about three inches by 1/2 an inch, and not very deep. Mine is FB35/037 9/9/86, and yours should differ only in the last n...

Re: F33 cat ketch +centerboard Pre-Purchase Checklist
Like any boat, there are a thousand things, but you can look at most of the F33 (F35 in the UK) fairly easily. Worth looking into the forward compartment which is also the chain locker, and seeing if the main mast step looks OK. Check that you can also raise the centreboard without too much difficul...

Re: beating at 45 degrees - advice from experts
Rafael, I'm not sure how the G10 rig will affect windward performance; does the luff slacken as increasing wind flexes the mast? This may reduce efficient pointing. You may well do better to trade pointing-up for VMG. We found that with new wrap around sails, beautifully cut by Geoff Hill at Solent ...

Re: Big pictures!
Pictures of "Castaway"; we don't have any large pictures of her under sail, that weren't taken from on board, but one under power shows the whole boat and permanent crew. We have a few with a wide angle lens showing some of the sail, one here, too.

Re: Boom crutch or gallows
We use a folding "x" shape boom crutch, which lies on the side deck when not in use, and doesn't fly about even in rough seas! On hot sunny days, we can rig a 'bimini' over it, and it's perfectly stable, or a tarpaulin to keep the rain off if we don't want to put up the cockpit tent.

Re: Windlass on an 1981 Freedom 33
On the UK built F 33's/35's, the windlass was mounted on the 'bowsprit', with a hawse pipe running down to the chain locker. You can see the layout from the photo taken when the windlass was removed for servicing. "Castaway" has a non-standard pulpit, but the bowsprit is original, and the same as th...
