Re: Sailing the coast of Portugal southbound
Rafa, It was September/October 2002 and March/April 2003 that we sailed down this coast and had very few problems apart from one completely new fish farm north of Povoa de Varzim where we wintered. Is the foot of your rudder attached to the keel? If so, I would suggest that when sailing the risks ar...

Re: Fuel fill idea
Hi Gerald, I'm surprised that you use so much diesel. My meticulous records give 1.5l per hour, year-after-year, admittedly including some motor-sailing and canal work, both with the old Volvo 2003 and the present Beta 30, both with fixed 3-blade props. (Obviously, I did not make it to the Northern ...

Re: larger holding tank in a 33 Cat Ketch
I put one into the toilet compartment of my UK 1987 35 CK in 2002. It's of s/s and about 1.5m height, five sided in the vertical to fit behind the door. Internal pump-up tube to the bottom, fills at the top, drains at bottom plus breather pipe to topsides just below the rail. Probably capacity about...

Re: Wanted: Mizzen sail for 33 wishbone
Anna, Take care and time over this. You might buy some time by using an old non-freedom mainsail, or even a genoa, simply laced onto the mast - though don't you have tracks? Old sails have no value in the UK so hopefully you could get one for next-to-nothing in your locality. Picture shows a Moody 3...

Re: bitts for 33 ketch and anchor windlass
Hi there, See my appends and photos from late-2018 and mid-2019. Used the new vertical windlass 90+ times during 2019 season with only very occasional jams in the navel pipe. This season (if we have one at all) I will let out the whole chain every two months to remove any turns that have jumped the ...

Re: Any tips on a GB circumnavigation?
Peter, Plenty of nice harbours on the east and north coasts of Scotland, though as Gerald says, many are small and a bit shallow. A surprising number of places to anchor off if you're careful. There are only limited Sailing Directions since the Clyde Cruising Club ceded its interest in the N&NE coas...

Re: reefing points of a cat ketch
Rafa, I think you have a centreboard boat in which case balance may be slightly important but for long-keel boats it hardly matters - within reason. The original descriptions of the F40 CK centre-boarders said that the easiest reef was to drop the backsail. I have two reefs on each sail however the ...
