Perkins 4.108 repair/replacement options

Hello, We have a 1983 Freedom 39 deck salon with a Perkins 4.108 engine, 3400 hours. Two problems with the engine: It's loud and it leaks oil out the rear engine seal and pan gasket, about a quart every 15-20 hours depending on RPM's. Otherwise, the engine starts and runs well, only belching smoke o...

Re: Noisy masts.

Thanks ketch22, we'll look in to seeing what can be done to further secure the bottom of the mast. I don't want to drill in to the masts for more L-brackets, I do want to be able to remove the masts down the road, I'm thinking box the base of the mast with wood, then glass around it to keep it from ...

Noisy masts.

The masts on our Freedom 39 DS creak loudly in the roll coming down the west coast. Not sure if the creak is coming from the deck or the step. The step looks to only be held in place with an L bracket, there is no well to drop the mast into and possibly shim. Am I missing something? Thanks, Doug s/v...

Re: Added ballast to the keel of a Freedom 39 DS?

Thanks Erik. We did have wind, 5 to 10 kts just off the stern. We had the main sail up. The foresail is not an asset sailing down wind unless we can wing on wing, as the mainsail blankets it. The roll was enough to overcome the wind pressure on the sail and cause the main sheet to slacken, then BAM ...

Added ballast to the keel of a Freedom 39 DS?

We've made it 180 miles south down the Oregon Coast. With the long ocean swells from the west, our '83 Freedom 39 deck salon rolls up to 15 degrees each side to side. This is a bit uncomfortable, and puts some strain on the masts and booms going back and forth. Mast creak is LOUD. The ballast to dis...

Re: How does the refrigerator water pump work? F28

I needed to take the pump apart and lubricate the "leather" with a little olive oil. It then would seal and draw water. Works pretty well IMHO.

Re: decoding Hull Identification Number, what year is my boa

Prior to 1984, the date code (M82K) started with A being August of the previous year. So K would be June 1982.
Does that make this boat a 1982 or a 1983 model year?

Freedom 39 PH survey, things to watch out for?

Hi, We are in the process of buying a Freedom 39 Deck Salon (same as pilot house, but no inside steering or aft head). Survey found some moisture in spots on the deck, but no rot, and some moisture on the port side in line with the main mast, which might be from a through hull or former through hull...

decoding Hull Identification Number, what year is my boat?

Hi, We are in the process of buying a Freedom 39 Deck Salon (same as pilot house, but lacking the aft head and inside steering station). The hull ID has been painted over and is hard to read, but the CG documentation indicates it is TPS39027M82K. Hull number is #27. There is some latitude in interpr...
