Re: Tight shifter
Sounds like the neutral safety switch. This is required to insure the transmission is in neutral before you can crank over the engine. It is a standard component on many shifters but is not required on sailboats.

Re: WHERE'E MY HULL I.D.?
Take a rubbing of the numbers, they should show up quite clearly. Position a piece of paper over the numbers, and lightly rub a pencil over the entire area. The pencil will darken all areas except the recesses forming the numbers. Its a simple technique to master. I find that using a dull-pointed pe...

Re: iPad navigation
I have been using the NavX app on my iPhone for several years. Original cost is $49. Updates for charts are free. It has full chart function, waypoints, and all the speed, course, distance, time calculations you would expect from a chartplotter. It works well on an iPad, but can be used on a phone b...

Re: Creaky cockpit seating
Why not make a proper repair? Remove the hatch, turn it over, and cut off the inner skin. Scrape out the balsa. Sand the surface and dry fit new balsa. Use a notched trowel to apply appropriate adhesive and press in the balsa. Layup a new inner skin, sand and paint. Since you have not compromised th...

Re: Is this a Freedom 40?
The photo shows a Nonsuch style wishbone, Freedom wishbones are round at the forward end. Also as Freedom wishbones go up and down with the sail they would be horizontal is the sail was down.

Re: Topping Lift for Camberspar

When dropping the jib, I would pull the sheet until the camberspar was inboard of the lifelines, then drop t...

Re: hydraulic ram help
You don't mention who looked at your cylinder. Here is a rebuilder for Capilano steerings systems in Safety harbor, FL. They might be able to offer recommendations. http://www.boatsteeringrebuilders.com I also know a fellow here in Rhode Island who recycles boats. I have sent him an email asking if ...

Re: Freedom Yachts
All sailboat molds were run over with a bulldozer or cut up with a chainsaw. Disappointing for me at the time as I wanted to add a swim platform to my 36.
