Re: Under Floor panel bottom of stairs on an F30

To be honest, I have never had the floorboard up between the engine and bilge, so don't know exactly what that area looks like. I can say then when we first got the boat and before we got the packing gland redone, it did leak more then desirable, and would leak water into the engine sump, which I as...

Re: Under Floor panel bottom of stairs on an F30

On my 1988 F32, my fridge has it's own drain line into the bilge. However, it would not surprise me that what you are seeing is the drain from the engine/shaft/packing gland area. If you still have a packing gland, it is not unusual (and in fact expected) for some seepage to occur -- which needs to ...

Re: Camber spar wing-on-wing

Soon after we purchased our 1988 Freedom 32 (should be the same boat as yours, except with the scoop aft), we purchased a whisker pole (approximately 6' when stowed, nearly double fully extended), and we have used it frequently for all of our head sails (camber spar, 110 and 155 drifter) for just su...

Re: Advice for pulling Freedom 32 (Hoyt) mast

I have a Freedom 32 (Mull), but based on the diagram, believe it is "similar" to mine. As was mentioned by Drew, it does depend on a urethane split ring (with a wedge profile) which is friction fitted at deck level to hold the mast, with the deck mast collar itself in place to secure this wedge. At ...

Re: Topping lift for F21?

Are your lazy jacks "adjustable"? I know on my F32 (Mull), I have to loosen them each time we go for a sail -- else, they would definitely impinge on the sail shape. After we stow the sail, I just re-tighten them to have the boom parallel to the deck (and not "sitting" too close to the dodger).

Re: F35 ordering new sails! Suggestions wanted

Mostly agree re: the 3 reefs -- but when you need the 3rd one -- it can be really handy (was transiting south on Lake Ontario all day on a reach in 30 - 40 knot winds once, and the 3rd reef was really a necessity). My boat (a Mull 32) also only has boom hardware for 2 reefs, and if the 3rd reef is s...

Re: Mast deck ring f30

On my F30/32, the mast ring has attachment points only towards the aft of the boat (i.e. the forward part of the ring is devoid of attachment points) so rotating it would not work. Also, my vang (rigid) actually attaches to the mast via a separate vang collar located approximately 6 inches above the...

Re: F35 Which of the 3 reef points are most useful?

On a related topic, I have used all three reef points (typically end up at reef 3 when the wind is steady at 35+, gusts 40+), however, with the in boom reefing on my boat (Mull 32), I do not have enough line in the "system" to accommodate rigging reef 3 and raising the sail all the way. Therefore, I...

Re: Main Halyard Problem

Haven't experienced this problem myself, but we do use a bungee from the main halyard (about a foot up from the sail top) to a lazy jack when in the slip to prevent the halyard from slapping the mast in windy conditions (really just a noise problem is this case though).

Re: Update on Singlehanded TransPac racer Jacqueline

Would concur with Geoff. I had a similar noise emanating from the base of my mast when conditions got lumpy and the mast would move about the tophat, creating a very unappealing sound. Not sure one can do much about the sound while under sail however. I solved the problem at the beginning of the nex...
