1987 Mull 28 Rudder Failure

Posted by lioneldmp7 (doug.payne@…>)

You may recall my post in panic in November around the rudder failure
suffered at Thanksgiving. Thought you might all like to hear the
outcome since it involves a very capable vendor. When we pulled the
boat we discovered a “bloody stump” right at the point where the
rudder shaft exits the hull. The rudder had sheared off at that
point. All that was left was shreaded fiberglass. From all I could
learn from the gods of Freedom and my posting, I was only the second
documented rudder failure in the fleet. Went to work to find a vendor
who could build a new rudder. Freedom lost the rudder plans for the
28, the molds were long gone, and Gary Mull’s widow didn’t respond to
repeated emails and phone calls. So no plans available. Got referred
to David Schwartz, President of GMT Composites and things started
moving very well. They did a super job in about 30 days getting a
custom rudder built. Carbon shaft, foam core, wrapped in carbon. This
rudder is a work of art and is similar technolgy to what they build
for very serious race boats. My expereince with GMT couldn’t have
been better. We didn’t have plans or molds. I sent them what was left
of the shaft and we found a 28 on the hard 7 miles from their
factory. They sent an engineer over and reverse engineered the
rudder. Once we got in production it was about three weeks and I had
digital photos every couple days to watch my baby be hatched. Shipped
the rudder, the local yard did the install and we had our first sail
this past week end, the boat handled beautifully.

Thanks to GMT, they have my highest recommendation. Not an
inexpensive solution, but good old State Farm came through on the
claim. So if anyone else looses a rudder, we have a solution.

Thanks for sharing the good outcome with us. Hopefully, no one will have to take advantage of your hard-earned experience in crafting a new rudder.

I’d like to second your praise of GMT Composites. I send en email to their tech service people a while ago when I wanted to drill a few holes in my mast. I told them I did not have a GMT mast, but that I didn’t know where else to turn. I got a prompt and informative reply. I hope I never need their services to replace a lost mast or rudder, but I do know they’re the ones I’d go to if necessary.

Eight grand for the rudder plus shipping
and about a grand at the yard to retrieve the boat, pull it, install the
rudder, bottom paint on the rudder, re launch, etc.
