I am in the market for a 35 and have noticed that the exterior of the
1993 version of the F35 mast has a much more uneven appearance than the
later year masts. Also the boom vang attachment point is bonded to the
mast as opposed to the stainless collars found on the later spars.
Anyone know what the pros or cons are reguarding this early mast
style? Clearly, they are still standing after 13 years, so they must
be as sturdy as the later masts. Just wondering…

If you search the message board you will
see many posting about mast construction. On the older boats the (not sure
about in 1993 mine’s an F-33 1982 ) The carbon fiber is covered with a
wrap of fiberglass cloth several inches wide and then with gelcoat. The joints where
the cloth overlaps as it spirals up the exterior tends to develop shallow
cracks. It is quite common based on the posting and other investigations.

I have hull 08 1993 Freedom 35. The mast looks just like a 1997 in the same town. Boom vang attachment is to a stainless steel collar at the bottom of the mast. Goose neck is through bolted and accessed through the spinnaker track in front of the mast. The mast is painted and smooth to the touch. I have never seen the mast arrangement you are referring too.
