1993 Freedom 35 Rudder Post

Posted by sitchmo (sylvanm@…>)

My boat yard just dropped the rudder from my 1993 Freedom 35 because
there is excessive play in the rudder at the bottom of the rudder post.
We thought that the bearings needed replacing, but they are in fine
condition.

Why would there still be excessive play in the rudder post area? Is
there a contact who is or was at Freedom that we can contact about this?

Thanks - Mac

Makes ya wonder if they were the right bearings to begin with. If
there’s no sign of real wear on the bearings and the stock is OK…

I’d try to get in touch with Mark Edwards and see what he has to say.
I don’t think Balfour still works at Legacy or I’d say call him. Most
of the old guard is gone. Mark has a long history of helping Freedom
owners so he could be the best bet. And when you get too old to sail
he’s got a sweet looking power boat he’ll sell you. I’ve seen one of
their boats and it looks pretty nice.

Dave - Thanks very much. Do you know how I get ahold of Mark?

Hi Mac,
Dave works for True North Yachts in Rhode Island. You can Google
True North Yachts and find his contact information on the website. He is a
gentleman and is always willing to help. We had a lovely conversation last
August at the Maine Boat & Harbors show on his True North 31, which is
built by Pearson Yachts. Good Luck,
TW

Try looking in the West System Repair Guide. They have a procedure to replace bearings using, of course, West System with graphite filler to form the bearings in place.

I thought other F35 owners would like to know the resolution to the
play in my rudder post. From my boat yard:

There is a sleeve that fits over the rudder post at each bearing
point. I noticed yesterday that the lower sleeve was a few inches from
the top of the rudder. Looking at it today, you can see where the
rudder has been slightly wearing on the edge of the inner bearing.
Aha! The sleeve has slipped up the rudder post leaving only about a
1/2" of bearing surface to ride on. When I slipped the bearing into
that position, there’s a whole bunch of play. Easy fix, reposition the
sleeve and out the whole works back together. We don’t even need to
make up new bearings. The ones you have are fine and have a long life
expectancy.
