Ab Initio is headed to Thailand.....

Posted by ajlorman (ajl@…>)

…as deck cargo!
I’m please to share with the group the news that Doug Domurat, the
previous owner of two Freedoms (a 28 cat ketch and a Mull 36), has
purchased Ab Initio and is having her shipped (literally) to Thailand.
Somewhat to my amazement, this transaction was accomplished entirely
electronically. Doug saw the photos I posted and shot me an email
and we quickly agreed on terms. That proved to be the easy part.
Getting a sailboat from the Chesapeake Bay to Thailand is not easy.
In fact, it is downright difficult and expensive. Of course, the fact
that many people in maritime shipping don’t have a clue doesn’t help.
When the so-called experts call the marina and ask if the boat is on
a trailer, you know you have problems. Then there are the folks who
simply never call back. In any event, Doug gets my award as the Most
Determined Freedom Purchaser of the Decade. He hung in there until he
found someone who actually knew what he was talking about. Alas, as
we all know, talk isn’t cheap. Ab Initio is due to be picked up next
week to be hauled to Baltimore and loaded onto a ship bound for
Thailand (slowly).
Doug is an American, formerly from California, who has lived in
Thailand for a number of years and travels throughout Asia on behalf
of his employer, a medical device manufacturer. I’ve received emails
from Doug from so many interesting places that I’ve considered packing
myself and a few bottles of water in Ab Initio’s aft cabin and
traveling to Thailand as a stowaway.
It was a real pleasure dealing with Doug directly. We did have a
survey since Doug was buying sight unseen (except for photos) and I’m
pleased that the survey confirmed my belief that Ab Initio is the
finest F30 afloat. I’m not sure that I could have done what Doug did:
have enough faith to wire someone (me) the money based on a survey
and an electronic handshake. But Doug did and I’m glad and I really
hope he’s not disappointed when Ab Initio reaches Thailand.
I’m sure Doug will become a valued member of this group. I appreciate
all the help I’ve received over the years and I plan to maintain my
“membership.”

Hi Everyone,

First I must take exception (jokingly) to the mail posted by Al.
He ends his post by signing “Al Lorman Ab Initio”. Sorry to say Al
but… Ab Initio has found a new home.
But seriously the sequence of events that lead to this successful
happy ending was not a simple one. At some point I had to establish
integrity without personal contact. The Freedom owners group started
that. Al graciously confirmed it.
I’m a Freedom disciple. My F28 was a wonderful little boat and the
F36 was nothing short of spectacular. I’m looking forward to the F30
with equal excitement. Al asked for visitation rights. Granted!
You’re welcome to join me if you can find that splendid little bay
on the island last in the chain just off Cambodia! Koh Kood.
I still have a task ahead of me before I’m sailing in the Gulf of
Thailand but I hope to gain more experience (as I already have )
from the group. I’ll have many questions to come and hopefully offer
some tips as well.
My 3rd Freedom…and convinced its a charm.

Cheers,

Doug

Congratulations Doug…I too am a F30 owner…I just bought

Lola,
I’m finding it more difficult to decide on my next boat than it was to
sell Ab Initio. Among my candidates are a Nonsuch 26, a J28, a Sabre 28 or 30,
etc.

Hey! Wait a minute! Doug didn’t pay by cashier’s check that was
“accidentally” made out for thousands too much that you should just
send him a check for the difference did he? heh heh Just kidding! I
love a happy ending. Welcome to the group Doug.

Al,

Please stay on with this group, even if you may decide to go for
another make. We’ll forgive you.

BTW, I purchased my F44 unseen (and unsurveyed) as well, and had it
shipped over to Europe. But that’s another long story. I felt I
could buy this boat unseen because several members of our Freedom
group helped me. One gave me the name of the insurance surveyor who
looked into his boat and my (to be) boat after Katrina so I could
check with the surveyor in what kind of state the boat was. An other
member of this group went over to the yard to have a look at the
boat and establish that it actually existed.
Anyway, I’m very happy that it all worked out.

First off, congratulations to Al and to Doug - Doug, you’re getting
an excellent vessel from one of our more knowledgeable members. Al,
Two Happiest Days in a boat owner’s life, right? Only, I suspect that
may not apply to us Freedom owners - I know how difficult it was to
give up Bright Star despite knowing that Glory was right around the
corner.

On a philosophical note, I know that brokers have their place and
that many people have had very good experiences with them. I bought
Bright Star from Chris and Janet Waln without a broker. I bought
Glory from Herk and Milly without a broker. Alex bought Bright Star
without one. I believe this was possible because of the quality of
the people that were involved. I am continually impressed by the
quality and character of the people involved in this group - it makes
my job as moderator very easy! Thanks everyone, keep up the good
work, and Spring is right around the corner! 22 days until pitcher
and catchers report.

Glory is already starting to make plans for her ‘summer cruise,’
which will start in July with a dash from Boston to Mystic Seaport.
From there, we will be meandering our way back to Boston through BI,
Cuttyhunk, MV, and wherever else seems like a good place to duck in.
It’s early yet, but if there is anyone else who plans to be in
LI/BI/MV Sound this summer, we’d love to meet up.

Lance

Easy job or no Lance, it’s appreciated. Thanks. Maybe we will see
you in BI.

Michel:

I
accept your forgiveness in advance. I do plan to remain a part of this
group. I haven’t left Freedoms; I just joined the alumni
association for now.
