Ab Initio safe arrival in Thailand

Posted by douglas.domurat (douglas.domurat@…>)

Hi,

Some of you may recall I bought Al Lormans F30 Ab Initio about 3 months ago and
promptly had her shipped to Thailand. Well…she arrived this past weekend safe
and secure
after about a 10 week ocean freight ordeal, (not to mention all the details in
shipping a
boat half way around the world). Shes currently in the yard in Jomtien Thailand
(Top of the
Gulf of Thailand) awaiting some enhancements such as Awlgriping the mast and a
few
other minor things. I expect she’ll be back in the water in about 7-10 days.

I understand Al is in process of procuring another sailboat to fill the void
left by my
acquiring Ab Initio. What I can say is…if any of you are thinking of buying a
pre-owned
sailboat I suggest you wait until Al intends to move on again (probably 2-3
years) and
make a standing offer NOW for the boat he’s about to buy. It will be a very nice
sailboat
indeed and you can be assured it will exceed your expectations. Al said Ab
Initio was one
of the finest F30’s afloat. Well… shes not floating yet but the claim is
valid. I bought her
sight unseen based on my communications with Al. My gut feeling turned out
right.
Thanks Al.

I’m a “Freedom guy” (having owned a few others) and look forward to sharing with
the
group my experiences sailing the F30 here in the gulf. Having said that I’ll be
looking for
advice too and the group has been such a wonderful resource of information.

Can’t wait to see that big full battened main nicely sheeted from the helm once
again.

Happy to be back in the Freedom world.

Cheers,

Doug

Doug
is too kind. What he is not saying is what a pleasure it was to deal with
him. Here’s this guy half-way around the world willing to spend
money on a boat he’s seen only in photos (I had to insist that a surveyor
be engaged), doggedly dealing with the numerous shipping issues that took
months to resolve. (It took us three emails to agree on a price, and four
months to arrange shipping.) Doug and I are about 12 hours apart so I
could count on hearing from him with the latest news in the morning, which was
my evening. In fact, once everything was sorted out and Ab Initio loaded
on a freighter in Baltimore, I began to miss my almost nightly email chats with
Doug.

I
like Doug’s idea that someone should make an offer NOW for my next
boat. In fact, if I accepted a deposit, that would help pay for improvements.
No wonder Doug is a successful businessman. Alas, Doug also probably has
it right that my next boat will stay with me for 2-3 years. When I was
explaining to a friend the difficult decisions involved in deciding what kind
of boat to buy next, he told me not to worry about it, that I would probably
buy another boat in 2-3 years anyhow and remedy any mistake I made now.

I’m
sure Doug will enjoy sailing Ab Initio (as suitably renamed) and I’m
really glad that I insisted on visitation rights.

Al

Al:

What features would you like on your next boat? Size, rig, depth, etc.?
