Charlie,
It’s a staysail yard. I don’t have a jib. If you look closely, the red
line connects the yard to a ring on the sleeve of the spinnaker. That
holds the front of the staysail forward. The foot is held down by
another loop on the aluminum yard and controls the tacking. It makes
the staysail self-tacking. You might have to look at the photos in full
size. The foot of the staysail comes back to the cockpit and is tied to
the cleat. The whole affair is supposed to make it easier to one-man
sail the boat. I’m not sure that a jib wouldn’t make it sail higher.
