Anti-Fouling Bottom Paint

Posted by C. D. Myers (lambdazeta_tke@…>)

Here is a question for you FRESH water TRAILER sailers…

If one is A)sailing on fresh water lakes and B)putting the boat on the
trailer whenever one is not sailing does one really need the expense
of anti-fouling bottom paint or will a hose down of the hull be
sufficent care for the bottom?

IF anti-fouling paint is nessacary do you recomend one of the ablative
paints or one of the hard slime resistant paints?

Clark,

If you are going to keep the boat on the trailer you do not need bottom paint. The are three coats of barrier coat from the water line down. I will tell you more when you pick up your boat.

Hi Clark, and group,
I’ve been a fresh water sailor of 3 Freedom sailboats.
If the boat is left in the water all season an antifouling paint is required or
the bottom gets really slimy and grassy, and that means SLOW! The ablative
copolymer paints are excellent because they are not ruined by long dry outs.
If the boat is only immersed for short periods, say less than a week at a time,
I think no bottom paint would be needed.
Best,
