We are new owners of a F45 (Hull No. 2). We purchased her last
winter, so we’ve just completed our first season with her.
Accordingly, our thoughts are not the most experienced, but I’ll
share them with you nonetheless, just be sure to take them for what
they are worth.

Generally speaking, we love the boat. She is incredibly comfortable
and very well mannered under way. In our view she shines at anchor,
but we are quite happy with her sailing and motoring
characteristics. She sails reasonably well, but is not as nimble in
light air as I expected. Not that she is a pig (not at all), I just
thought a Gary Mull designed hull would have moved a little better
in the lighter stuff. (Of course, our experience very well could be
a result of our inexperience with the boat and lack of sailing
ability. .)

Likewise, I found her surprisingly stable and well-mannered in
heavier air. We can keep full sail in 20 knots apparent going to
windward. Frankly, we haven’t reefed the mail yet. That’s more of
a factor of our not having seen 25 or 30 knots under sail yet I’m
sure, but that’s our experience so far.

The boat appears very well built and the systems are well
installed. The few problems we had were the result of older gear
giving out. That’s going to be case with any used or older boat.

She also motors well. When not dragging the dink we can maintain 8
knots as a cruising speed, while burning about 1.25 gallons per
hour. We have the Yanmar 66hp turbo charged diesel, which we
understand was standard on yhe boat.

One thing we just figured out that’s interesting. We have the shoal
draft wing keel, which is reported to draw 4’11". After hauling her
a couple of weeks ago, we measured her, and from yhe waterline to
the bottom of the keel is 66".

Regards,

DG

DG:

I can’t tell you anything about an F45, since I have an F30, but I can tell you
that, in my experience, the stated draft of a Freedom is just that: stated.
When I bought my boat last winter, I measured the draft on three 30’s; not a
single one had a draft of 4’6". All were about 5’. Several others on this list
reported the same experience.

we are also new owners of a 45 like DG. we bought the boat (hull
#21) in july and have been working and playing on it a lot. we
actually can totally relate to DG’s story-we have gone through all
the same things and feelings. we love the boat! we also have had
to replace and fix up things (we pretty much knew all of the issues
even before the surveys were done). things get old and broke down
because of lack of use, but overall it has been an amazing
experience.

we also found her to be extremely stable in the heavy winds that hit
the so. cal bight this weekend. we reached 20 knot winds and didn’t
have to reef or question the stablity-very impressed. and just like
DG we haven’t been in heavier winds, but it is all a learning
process.

we live aboard as well and couldn’t have asked for a more
comfortable boat-very roomy and well layed out.

hope that helps a little.
