The depth instrument on my boat appears to have given up the ghost. However, I
believe the
transducer is still operable. Can I simply buy a new depth instrument and
connect it to the
existing transducer?

Transducers run on specific frequencies. You can probably replace the depth instrument with the same brand unit, but it would be riskier if you changed brands. I think you’ll find that the transducer is the less expensive part of the package and it might cost as much to get a new instrument as getting a complete new package (unless you have to haul your boat just to replace the unit).

I believe there are two frequencies in use. A good electronics supplier will know. The frequency used is in the operators manual. Try it if it does not work, you can Marine Tex new transducer to the bottom of the hull if you know where where it is solid glass.fgljff <fgljff@…> wrote: The depth instrument on my boat appears to have given up the ghost. To keep the answer simple, it depends on a few things; mostly the brand, and how old the DS is… Datamarine, Standard Horizon and a few others used a standard RCA type plug. If that is the case you can use any head which accepts that plug. If the DS is a newer type of a standalone DS and is not part of a network it is also possible if you can get a pin readout of the connector they use since there are only 2 major manufacturers of the transducers. fgljff <fgljff@…> wrote: The depth instrument on my boat appears to have given up the ghost. The depth sounder instrument is a Signet. The boat is a 1982 F25, and for all I
know, the
Signet instrument could be OEM. Perhaps I should just go with another Signet,
although I
would rather use a Garmin or Raymarine.

The early Signet DS used a RCA plug. Check the back of your DS. The RCA connector is a push-on/pull-off connection with the end from the transducer having the male part and the instrument having the female end. Check used marine stores and/or the Web for any DS using that connector and you will probably be good to go. If my memory serves me Signet is still around although maybe not still making your old unit. fgljff <fgljff@…> wrote: The depth sounder instrument is a Signet. The
