Autopilot Ram

Posted by escondidobill (escbill@…>)

Can anyone give me some insights on what length of stroke their
hydraulic rams are for a Freedom 36’? Is seems the tech support groups
at any of the autopilot manufacturers don’t have any idea at
all…strange since they must be selling some to boats of this
size…Thanks!

Bill,

The calculation is not difficult. Your rudder has a max hardover angle
of 75*, 37.5* per side. Perhaps it’s less on your boat because the
rudder stops create a smaller hardover angle.

for each hydraulic cylinder, the distance from centre of rudder shaft
to center of attachment point on the quadrant is given. This is the
length of the rudder arm.

with your harover angle and the length of the rudder arm you can
calculate or measure the lenghth of the piston in the cylinder you
need.

If you want to be on the save side, you can also calculate the force
the cylinder has to deliver. For this, you need to know the shape and
surface area of your rudder.

Vetus, supplier of hydraulic steering systems in europe, supplies
templates for all these calculations in their brochure. Have a look at
www.vetus.com

good luck,
michel

Time to get out the trig book. It really depends on many factors
such as length of rudder arm that you purchase, location of ram
mounting, ect.
Note: Loads on the ram are 1000s of lbs, so mounting of ram is very
important. If you are not sure, it maybe best to consult a
professional for install advise.

van

Freedomers

Kobelt has a Basic Selection Guide which I used on designing the instillation on SV Cayenne.

Take special note of Figure 1 and 2.

The relationship of the transom and the radial drive disk make it relative easy to fit the
Cylinder.
