Balso Cored Hulls

With regard to the recent correspondence on the pros & cons of balsa-cored hulls and matters concerning moisture uptake I recommend the series of articles that have recently appeared in the excellent US magazine Professional Boatbuilder. These articles contain the most recent informaiton on the subject and are very informative:Issue 94 - April/May 2005 - Core Installation by Bruce Pfund. This article looks at preparation of hull laminates for core installaiton and defines best practices for use of core materials in boat hulls, including Balsa.Issue 96 - August/September 2005 - Wet Balsa Core by Rick Strand. This article describes recent research into the problem & proposes somewhat surprisingly that with some reservations one can safely leave moisture in a balsa-cored hull laminte… Issue 97 - October/November 2005 - Penetrations & Closeouts by Bruce Pfund. This article looks at methods and materials for attaching items to the inside of cored hulls and making thro-hull openings - some good practical advice.Wilf Bishop - Freedom 21 No 205 - United Kingdom

An observation about leaving most in a balsa core:

A core in a laminate functions only as spacer between the two
glass/resin layers. It functions in the same way as the middle part
in a steel I-beam or as the waves inside wave-cardboard: the spacing
between the two strong layers gives stifness to the laminate. As
soon as separation of core and glass layers occurs, the stifness
degrades and there is a problem. As long as there s no delamination,
there is not a big problem.
