Best sailmaker for Freedom 35?

Posted by freesailah (freesailah@…>)

I am looking for a new sail for my Freedom 35. Does any one have any
recommendations for sailmakers? I live in New Hampshire on the coast.

try www.somersetsails.com
good sails at reasonable prices.
We will be cruising from Nyack to Maine this summer on our 1994 F35, just back from 8 months in the Bahamas.

Hi Lou
Thanks for your advice. I will look Somersetsails up. Have you had
sails made by them.
Hope you have a good cruise this summer. I will be cruising up to
Northeast Harbor in Aug.

When you’re looking for a sailmaker, please be sure to ask them how
many sails they’ve made for freestanding mast boats, whether it’s
Freedom, Tanton, or Nonsuch or anyone else. There is a definite
difference to the sail cut when you’re designing for a self-depowering
rig like a freestanding mast vs. a mast that is designed to always be
in column. There are a number of good sailmakers out there that have
experience in the freestanding arena - the sailmaker I use is more
expensive than some but trust goes a long way. Lowest price won’t
always get you the best deal.

Others on the board will probably have some input as well, but one
thing I would recommend is that any sailmaker who’s not willing to
actually come see the boat and how you use it and take some
measurements is probably not the way you want to go. The 35 is more
standard than most, but if your sailmaker relies either on your
measurements or the ‘measurements database’ they have, there is a risk
that they will get it wrong.

Who do you use for a sailmaker?

We’ve had really good luck with Thurston Quantum Sails in Bristol, RI. Their service has been good and the sails great.
