Bigger Boat

Posted by Doug (dougie131313@…>)

I would suspect that some of you out there have bigger boats or have
had bigger boats. I have a wife and three kids and a dog and we
don’t fit on the boat very well for over night stay. Day Sailing
works fine but I would like to be able to spend a few nights on board
without feeling cramped up with the whole family. My loving wife has
all ready told me that I need to buy a bigger boat (bless her heart,
I’m all ready looking). After sailing the 21 for the last 6 months,
I have learned that I need a marine toilet (the flushing kind for the
ladies) Peeing off the boat or in the porta potty is fine for us guys
but it just dosen’t cut it for the three females that I live with
especialy when we are going fast and the boat is heeling.

The things I love about the F21 is the freestanding mast, easy to
trailer and travel with (I’m in the army so it will be moving a lot)
and a very well built boat.

So with all my research in the last few weeks for bigger boats it
seems the 26-28 foot is ideal for traveling and yet big enough for a
family of 5 with a dog. I’ve been looking at the C&C, Catalina,
Colombia, J boats and S2 and it seems the youngest boat out there is
built in the late 80’s. Are there any newer boats out there and if
not who builds the best boat which matches the quality of a
freedom?

I moved up from a Freedom 21 to a Freedom 28 Cat Ketch. It has a lot of room. I have been thinking of trying out a Freedom 25 as I don’t seem to take out the 28 nearly as often as I used to take out the 21. There was also a 28 which as well as the 25 look like stretched versions of the 21. If you like the sailing characteristics and rig on the 21 you might want to check them out. Laissez les bons temps rouler

Is it your intent to trailer a 26-28 foot sailboat?
In my opinion, a 26-28 footer is going to still be “cramped”. To fit 5 plus a dog you’re going to need something closer to a 30 footer. My sailing group is 2 adults (skipper + 1st mate) and a dog.
In terms of construction, J/Boats are good (and fast) as they are built by the same factory (TPI, Tillitson-Pearson, Pearson Composites, etc.) that built the Freedom 21. Now J/Boats is normally known for its racers, but it has built a number of “cruisers” and “cruiser/racers”. However, you will pay for the quality. Catalina 30 is a very popular boat and there are a lot of them.

I really don’t want to share this with many of you,(because I wanted to get
it) but since I’m probably not going to be able to pull it off, there is a
Hoyt designed Freedom 32 (our 21’s BIG brother) for “sail” up in Georgetown,
Maine.

Sorry Tom, I didn’t mean to get your hopes up about a trailer. I won’t be selling my F21 for a long time, I suspect It will be a few years until I’m in the position to buy a larger boat. A 32 footer is way to big to haul around the US and it seems 28 feet and bellow keeps you legal on the roads and isn’t to much to handle. I looked at the F25 and it still seems a little to small but I do like the simplicity of the unstayed mast. Does anyone know much about a Laser 28 it seems to have quite a bit more room (Bathroom for the ladies) and it looks fast.

Lets go sailing,
Doug

Laser 28 is a fast boat. One races out of Haverstraw, NY in the PHRF series.
