Bilge Pump woes...

Hello all,

I have a 1985 Freedom 32 with a leaky manual bilge pump in the sail
locker/cockpit
location. I would like to completely replace the manual pump with a new one,
probably
also check the hoses to with possible replacement as well. Further, the
previous owner
had installed a small electric Rule pump in the bilge, which malfunctioned and I
have
removed this.

Questions: 1) What would you recommend for a new manual bilge pump?

  1. Same question for the electric pump?

And I had an experience yesterday with 30+ knots of wind – quite exhilerating,
to say the
least! Under full sail, boat kept rounding up into the wind I guess because the
rudder kept
coming out of the water due to heel? My knotmeter was reading around 9 - 9.4
knots
going on a broad reach, wing and wing. Heck of a ride, which culminated in a
not-to-be
desired docking experience!!

Bilge pump questions arise because I ended up with a close to full bilge! Boat
seemed to
take on a ton of water when engine was in reverse around the docks. Any
thoughts??

Jeff,

Have you checked the packing for the rudder collar?

Since you are taking on water in reverse that would be the first
thing to check. It rides above the water line at the dock; but, in
reverse the stern squats just enough to dunk it.

Two feet of 3/4 square packing solved my problem. Just be sure to
use a torque wrench to set the bolts on the collar.
