boat needs LOTS of work

Posted by Daddy (ymgalvez1969@…>)

I have a Freedom 21 that requires some work. I know almost nothing
about this sailboat, except that I loved to sail her when I was much
younger. The boat has sat in my driveway since I got her from my Dad.
I priced lines at WestMarine and some other odds and ends. It looks
like a restoration to sail her would cost nearly $2000 (the trailer
needs all new tires!).

Is there anyone in the San Antonio area that can help me/direct me to
getting her fixed?

Thanks,

Get er done!!! I dont live in the SA area but am located north of
you and I sail on lovely Stillhouse Hollow Lake. I would be happy to
help in any way I can. You cant beat a Freedom 21 for pure sailing
pleasure without a lot of work. I have been crewing on a J 29 down at
the Austin Yacht Club for the last five weeks. Last Saturday we had a
good bit of breeze and by the time I got off the boat I felt like I
had been rode hard and put up wet. Not that I didnt have fun but I
dont think there was a one of us who didnt have a cut or bruise
somewhere by the time we were done. Would never have happened on my
Freedom 21. LOL

You might save some money buying ur cordage (yeah and I know there is
alot of it) on the internet. I think I used an ebay store called
Milwaukee rigging for my cordage last time I had to buy any quantity
of it. You can buy spin halyard and main halyard first to get the
stick up in the air and then replace the rest as you need to. What
other work do you need to do? Feel free to contact me offlist and
here is my cell phone number 254-368-4187. I would be happy to
help. I have a sailing sickness…it cant be cured… and i wanna
pass it along anyway I can.

PS I occasionally get asked what kind of a boat name is Nana. Well
it is a term of affection for ones grandma. And if you have ever
sailed a Freedom 21 you know she is a kindly boat that treats you well
no matter what u might mistakenly do to her. Forgiving, always ready
for a little fun, not real fast, and always brings me home…just
like grandma.

Hi,

You and I are in (into) the same boat and you have come to the right
place. I’m also restoring a Freedom 21.

Here’s some things I have discovered thus far.

This is a great group of Freedom 21 owners. They have provided me with
lots of advice, all of it good. They have have made what I believed to
be impossible, pretty easy.

I had planned to sail “Top Cat” this summer. Unfortunately, because I
have had to learn how to restore the boat rather than have it restored,
everything has taken much longer than I expected. We have a short
sailing season here. By the time I have Top Cat ready to sail,
everyone will be taking their boats of of the water for the winter.

Things I’m currently working on include:

The mast. I’m rewiring the boat and the mast will require new lights,
antenna, and new support for the wind direction indicator.

Rewiring. I’m going to install a breaker panel and install all new
wiring light lenses and bulbs.

Sails. I replaced the main sail with a new one from Somerset Sails. I
had Somerset sails repair the spinnaker.

Trailer. I had new tires and wheels installed. I’m also replacing the
parking lift.

Interior. The interior of Top Cat was pristine. No work there.
However, I did buy a butane hotplate from an Oriental market to use for
a stove. Following the suggestion from a member of the group, I
replaced the clean water container with a bladder type.

I will be pleased to share what I have learned from the group with you
and what I discover about restoring the boat in the months ahead.

Be sure to visit http://www.freedom21.info and look at the boat photos
there. They are very inspirational and useful for seeing what your
boat should look like.

Sincerely,

Max Lent

Max,

I am also rewiring my CF mast. I need to install nav. light, antenna
and a wind vane. Could you share some of your findings such as
mounting at mast top. My mast is down and I think I have a mounting
for the nav. light but nothing else.

I am also changing my main halyard.

Steve,

You are moving much faster than I am. I’m still removing old brackets
on my mast and haven’t yet gone to West Marine to ask advice on new
brackets.

When I removed the mast cap I found an old wasp nest at the top of the
mast. Wasps were using previously unplugged holes in the mast to come
and go. I plan to plug all of the holes when I am done.

Keep us informed about your work. Send photos if you can.

Thanks,

Hi - When I did Emmylou’s mast (quickly in 3 hour period while waiting for it to be stepped by yard) I just went at it with a cordless drill and some carbide bits. No problems at all (and no wasps!). So get those boats ready and get out sailing. To egg you on here a couple of sailing shots from last month or two, with tweaks and the promised look at our homebrew bimini: http://www.seanmulligan.com/Stories/Emmylou-Summer06/ Sean Mulligan / Vivian Werner Emmylou #307Max Lent <maxlent@…> wrote: Steve,You are moving much faster than I am. Sean,

You have done wonderful things to Emmylou. I am impressed. It also
looks like you had great fun sailing her. I really like your awning.
Thank you for the photos.
