bomar hatches

Posted by Frank (myslo@…>)

The other day I was working on the cabin top, sitting on my butt.
On occasion, I needed to move to a position that put me squarely onto
the galley hatch. it promptly cracked !
I had always considered Bomar hatches to be flimsy. I had replaced
the original ones a few years back, but could not find any other make
of hatch fitting that opening. (16 7/8 by 167/8)

I wonder what other F 33 owners have experienced in that regard?

Does someone need to go on a diet??? (
The hatches on my F32 seem much more robust than yours. I would
think you’d be able to get new plastic cut to the right shape at a
local plastic’s manufacturer.

Speaking of Bomar Hatches does anyone know where I can get the parts for the
handles? The round plastic nut thing/cap(on the outside of the hatch and where
the bolt goes into) is split all round from tighting to tight and is beconing
non-functional.

Bomar
sells parts and complete replacement handles. Your hatch sounds like the same
kind I have on my F30. If so, spare parts are no longer available and you have
to buy completely new handle assemblies (at about $30 each). Defender sells
them for less than Bomar and you can get them during the annual warehouse sale.

Be happy that it happened in port, and not when a wave hit your hatch!

Consider replacing the acrylic glazing with polycarbonate (lexan). If
you want to thump your butt on it, make the glazing an 1/8" thicker.
Remember, stiffness is related to the thickness-squared. Herm

Michel, our reply was, more or less, on point.
I wan’t seeking advice regarding my diet, nor advice of how to make
the lens stronger. I wanted to alert other owners of such incredible
junk, and I wanted to find out if others went through the same thing.

It continually amazes me how a lot of people buy put up with such
shoddy stuff, as evidenced by the replies I got to this.

I replaced all of my original F-33
hatches. They were crazed and flimsy.
On all but the forward hatch I used
Manship (mostly double opening) ss hatches. They are terrific and custom sizes
cost almost the same as standard sizes (very expensive to begin with).
On the forward hatch I used a Bomar
Seabreeze offshore series since it has a design that at a certain setting
works as a dorade. I would strongly recommend against this hatch and wish I
had not purchased it for a variety of reasons. Just FYI.

Alan,
The SeaBreeze hatches always seemed like a good idea and PS liked
them. Obviously you thought so, too, when you bought it! So how does
it not work? No good on the foredeck but might work in a place with
less water? Or just doesn’t flow as much air as expected?
Thx,
dge

The problems were in a few areas. The
basic dorade ventilation was not a problem although there wasn’t as much
airflow as expected it didn’t leak much unless a wave hit it (but in
those conditions I usually had it fully secured to prevent water ingress.

Here are the problems I had:

Delivery
was delayed several times for several months due to manufacturing problems
where they seemed to have trouble making it properly. To their credit they
caught whatever problems there were and didn’t ship to me. On the
other hand they didn’t keep me informed and they escalate the
priority just waited for the next orders I guess.
When
it arrived the dimensions were not what I expected. The hatch was a half
inch smaller then my opening. They explained they measure them differently
then the other hatches. Note that I had not only ordered a specific size
but also went over my opening dimensions on the phone with them prior to
ordering. I ended up living with it.
I
bought their hatch shade that attaches to it. It was almost impossible to
install and easy to break . It never worked. When I called they said yeah
its difficult.
The
overall construction did not impress me for true offshore use.
After
2 seasons one of the hatch supports twisted and the support pin broke (not
from stepping on it, looks like the pin just slid part way out which
allowed the support to twist so when I closed the hatch…).
The
twist locks on the supports are much harder to operate and less secure
then my other hatches.

Good idea, poorly executed.
Alan

Alan,
Thanks. Had thought of one for the head on our Sabre but ended up with
a Lewmar Ocean. Way cheaper and a known item. (The size 00 is listed
nowhere but was in stock!)
Two comments on the Bomar hatch issues. The three on our old Freedom 28
were fine but looked somewhat crazed, or had faint internal cracks. I
think this is just the nature of the beast - many decades old acrylic
or worse (from an aging perspective) lexan. Worth reglazing before they
break!
As for the old round lever “mushrooms,” a friend with a 28 and now a 30
had a gunsmith machine replacements out of brass. Might be simpler than
going to the square ones.
