Last night, laying awake in our V-berth I was thinking about the
Freedom rig and how cool it is. A cat boat with a free standing
rig… what a concept… what a new experience it will be to sail her.
And that got me thinking back on all of the boat’s I’ve sailed and
owned. That eventually led me back to the very first boat I ever
sailed myself. The one I learned to sail on and low and behold! It
was a cat boat with a free standing rig! I’ve come full circle now.
And that little boat is still in our family as my brother cares for it
now. It even has a wrap around sail.

Hi,
I’ve got an F32. Main falls in between lazy jacks and jib falls onto
camberspar. I’ve seen so much stuff on the board lately about wrap
around sails, but I can only imagine that they somehow stow by wrapping
them around the mast. Am I close? What are they?

Larry,
on the original Hoyt-designed cat ketches, the sails were two-ply and
literally wrapped around the mast. This allowed for a more laminar flow
(supposedly), but are more expensive to produce because you’re
essentially sewing two sails together. It also meant no steaming light
on the foremast, radar mount on the mizzen, or really anything else
that wasn’t mounted at the top of the mast.
If I recall, the original F40 Cat Ketch actually had two sets of
wraparound sails. One was the ‘standard’ set, and the othe was a
smaller storm set that didn’t use the wishbones at all, just a loose
foot.
