Cabin has the smell of diesel

Posted by Mark Thompson (methomp@…>)

My 1988 F30 cabin has a diesel smell in it that is really annoying. I
have removed the cabin cushions and will have them steam cleaned. I am
planning to scrub down the cabin with something like Simple Green.
Obviously, I do not want to wreck the beautiful wood and thought I
better ask some more experienced Freedom lovers. Has anyone else had
any experience with this problem? Any cabin cleaning solutions you
would recommend? Thanks.

I have the same problem on my F30 #12 from 1986. I have found two sources, one smells like a warm diesel engine, and the other smells like diesel fuel. 1. The engine is tightly enclosed and has no vent system other than the air intake of the engine itself. With the engin running about 30 cubic feet of fresh air is pulled into the engine compartment which purges out some of the engine smell. But when the engine stops all of the smell floods back up into the boat. Installing a small blower and using while the engine is running and for about 20 minutes after it is shut off will help a lot with this problem. If this powered vent is attached to a Dorade type hood, then the venting will continue even after you are ashore. 2. The aluminum fuel tank cleanout (a 4 inch. pipe treaded square top plug) was slowly weeping raw fuel when the tank was full on our boat when we bought it. This small leak, and all others, must be found and sealed. Fargo S/V NARISA F30 #12Mark Thompson <methomp@…> wrote: My 1988 F30 cabin has a diesel smell in it that is really annoying. I had some fuel leak (small amount) in the engine compartment. This has caused
the insulation to absorb some fuel and smell. I am replacing the insulation with
hopes of odor elimination. You should check out your insulation.

My F-33 had a diesel smell but turned out
to be a small leak at the gasket of the yanmar fuel filter. Really permeated
things and was hard to locate.
Have found simple green to be quite good
and harmless to the wood.

Hello,
I had the same problem when I bought my 1981 Freedom 40. I replaced the fuel tank vent hose, and fuel tank fill hose. Both were original, and after years of service became permeated with fuel. After about two hours of work, the smell is gone.

Also,
You should never be able to smell diesel fuel in your engine compartment or cabin. If you do, you have a leak or permeated hoses somewhere. Follow all your fuel lines from tank to engine. Make sure all connections are leak free. Replace all gaskets on primary and secondary fuel filters. Check all compression fittings, banjo fittings etc, replacing all with new crush washers. When all leaks are found and stopped, wash the entire engine with a degreaser. Use absorbant pads under engine to catch the cleaning solution. When done, you should not be able to smell diesel at all.
